New Project from Vagrant Story Director Yasumi Matsuno

If you’re a fan of Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics, here’s some news that may interest you. Yasumi Matsuno, one of the people behind those games, has revealed a new project he’s working on.

The name of this new project is Unsung Story, and it will be a multi-game series for mobile platforms. The first game will be a Final Fantasy Tactics-like strategy game entitled Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians. It will be set in a fantasy world called Rasfalia, where you represent one of many small kingdoms that have emerged in the land. You fight against monsters as you try to decipher the meanings of a war that has lasted for 50 years.

Valve Making Three Announcements Next Week, Moving In On Living Room

Stop the Internet. Valve just send out an email with the number 3 in it. You know what that means, right? Half. Life. Three.

Nah.

But Valve is definitely up to something. I just received an email from Valve talking about making Steam more accessible on televisions and in the living room, starting with an announcement on Monday, followed by two more for a total of three announcements.

The link provided leads to a page that states that "The Steam Universe is Expanding in 2014" and shows both a traditional-looking gamepad controller and a timer that runs out on Monday.

The New Strider Game is a Classic Reborn

In recent years, there have been many classic game-inspired re-imaginings—from Bionic Commando to DuckTales. At TGS 2013 today, I was able to get my hands on the newest one: Strider.P

As it’s been nearly 15 years since the release of the last Strider game, many of you may only know about the character from his appearances in the Marvel vs. Capcom titles. However, in the nineties he was the star of his own series of games.P

Xbox One Can't Be Stood Vertically

Perhaps that headline is a little misleading; you can stand the Xbox One vertically if you want, it’s just that if you do so, it might break.

"We don’t support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk," Albert Panello, Xbox senior director of product management and planning told Gamespot.

"It wouldn’t be a cooling problem," Panello continued, "we just didn’t design the drive for vertical. Because it’s a slot loading drive, we just didn’t design it for both".

Konami Licensing Hudson IPs Like Far East Of Eden To Other Companies

Far East of Eden was one of Hudson’s classic RPG series that harkens back to the TurboGrafx-16. The last game in the series was Far East of Eden Ziria which was released for Xbox 360 and since Hudson was absorbed into Konami we weren’t sure if we would see another Far East Eden game again. But, there is one in development.

Playdek, the company working with Tactics Ogre creator Yasumi Matsuno, announced they are also making a Far East of Eden card game for mobile platforms. The game is slated for release in late 2014 and it will be released internationally.

Tetsuya Nomura Details Final Fantasy XV, and How the PS4′s Memory Turned Impossible into Possible

Nomura-san had a lot to say about the game’s systems, the tech it’s based on, its story and themes, and the synergy with the PS4. Below you can read a summary of the points he makes in the interview. At the bottom of the post you can find the video itself.

Final Fantasy XV is the first numbered Final Fantasy to be an action RPG. Since when Final Fantasy became 3D, Square Enix made heavy use of prerendered cutscenes, but the hardware has changed, so what was previously prerendered now can be displayed in real time. So even in a quite cinematic scene you’ll be able to control the character.

An example of that is the scene of the E3 trailer where Noctis is fighting and flying in the city and leviathan is rampaging causing a massive wave. Before that would have been prerendered, but this time it’s in real time and playable.

The concept is to make battles as seamless as possible while switching between actions. Each character is very unique and they work together taking advantage of their unique abilities. Even those interactions are rendered in real time instead of prerendered.

The scene in which Prompto covers Noctis is also in real time. Since the game is now action based, the focus of the battle is to give a sense of speed and to make the enemy act as much as possible. Enemies and allies move around, the battle situation changes rapidly, and there’s a sense of realism. Nomura-san thinks that’s where Final Fantasy XV differs from previous Final Fantasy games.

FFXV is similar to previous games of the series in the visualization of numerical values on the screen, like HP, or in the fact that when an ally or an enemy receives an attack, damage is displayed as numbers. Even if now the point is the flow of battle, the team has kept those elements or people would feel that it’s not Final Fantasy. Both action and numbers are present, and there are probably no other action games where these two coexist.

The story inherited the foundation of the world of Final Fantasy XIII and Type Zero, and is rooted in the mythology of Fabula Nova Crystallis. That said, the world itself is different and original. It has a more modern feel. The story is simple: about heroes that go to recover the crystal stolen by the enemy, but it mixes with the relationships between characters to create a plot appropriate to Final Fantasy.

Since the theme of the game is “a fantasy based in reality”, the concept of the world is similar to the real world, but it’s a big point of FFXV that a fantasy develops in that world. Realizing the power of that concept before the coming of the PS4 was difficult.

Phil Harrison: Xbox One Will Never Come Without Kinect

Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison is underlining the company’s support of the new Kinect with Xbox One. According to an interview with CVG, Harrison dashes the hopes of fans holding out for a cheaper, Kinect-free Xbox One bundle.

"CVG: A quick word on Kinect – I presume there will never be an Xbox One sold without it. You are doing this for developer-related reasons as much as your own. You want all developers to know that they can always implement Kinect technology because it always comes with every system. Would that be correct?

Phil Harrison: Correct. Xbox One is Kinect. They are not separate systems. An Xbox One has chips, it has memory, it has Blu-ray, it has Kinect, it has a controller. These are all part of the platform ecosystem."

Interview: Son of Nor Dev Reveals Pros And Cons Of Kickstarter, Looks For A Little Steam

For every game that begins with the words Super Mario or Call of Duty, there is a game that launches a new IP, a studio, or even a career. But for people like 23-year-old designer Ricardo Valenzuela, it’s a challenge that breeds innovation and excitement:

I always wanted to do games, but living in Ecuador where there’s no game industry meant I had to move. I started the process to move to Canada, but since I had to wait several years for it, I thought it would be good to start a portfolio. So I immersed myself in forums and started reading books and other stuff on how to break into the game industry and such.

It was by answering one of those posts that led to a pro bono position at Stillalive Studios, which led to a game designer position for Son of Nor, the upcoming independent third-person action adventure title for PC and Mac.

“When I came in the game was completely different,” said Valenzuela of the Kickstarter project. “There was spell-stealing, two-handed spellcasting, and lots of other stuff that sounds fun and all, but in practice was not all that great. The gameplay was slow, kind of boring, and it took a lot of time to cast one spell, for example. So I made some changes.”

Square Enix Still Talking Final Fantasy Type-0 in West

Released in Japan on October 27, 2011 for the PlayStation Portable, Final Fantasy Type-0 is a game that both North American and European audiences alike have been petitioning for. There was a glimmer of hope last November when Square Enix’s Hajime Tabata mentioned in an interview with Gamespot that there is still hope for localization but they are waiting for an opportunity. New Square Enix West CEO, Phil Rogers has now stepped up and responded to the many petitions for the game.

I’ve seen your Facebook page and I hear your question clearly. I’ve posted on the blog that this is one of the first questions I’m going to tackle. It’s not a quick question to answer but I’m looking into it and I’ll update everyone when I can. But I mentioned (again on the blog) that I don’t want to get hopes up as localizing previously released games sometimes isn’t possible when the team have moved onto other projects. But I will look into this thoroughly.

Ex-Nintendo Employee Discusses the Smash Situation at EVO 2013

As far as Smash Bros. goes, Mercury said that Nintendo sometimes consider the franchise as a “dangerous” brand. On one hand, Nintendo knows that every Smash Bros. game will sell well– but on the other hand, it associates their beloved characters with violence. Mercury remarked:

Unlike most other fighting game characters, the Nintendo mascots have far-reaching brands and franchises unto themselves that have to be considered and protected in a bigger picture view. EVO would have taken the character representations out of the hands of Nintendo’s control, boiled them down to pure violence, and broadcast it directly to 125,000 people. It’s not hard to see why Nintendo would be a little gun-shy.

Dungeons & Golf Coming to North America

Dungeons and Golf! Now that I have your attention, Japan released a mobile game called Dungeons & Golf for iOS and Android phones back in December. And yes, it is a golf game with Japanese role playing game twist. Instead of swinging around swords at monsters, you play golf where the balls are actually magical beings the shape of a golf ball waiting to be smacked by you. If all this sounds ridiculously interesting, then the next bit of news should induce a smile: It’s being localized for North America.

Developed by AppBankGames, This free-to-play game starts you off with 10 playable golfers and not one of them sport a pastel colored Polo shirt. If anything they’re more akin to the kind of characters you’d find in an unlocalized JRPG like the buff shirtless dude riddled with tattoos or a girl straight out of an Otomedius game.

Squeenix’s salvaged Final Fantasy MMO lives for the weekend. Sorry, is live for the weekend. Crucial difference. Old hands who participated in phase three in June and can probably ride a Chocobo with no hands already have instant access; the rest of us can hop over to join them from 2am PDT / 6pm BST tomorrow.

Now we’re in open beta, progress will carry over to release servers – making this the perfect time to get grinding.

Square are stress-testing their housing zones this weekend, which means the town of Mist in Limsa Lominsa – accessible from Lower La Noscea – will be open to explore. Clearly there’ll be no player houses to ogle yet, but the dev team have filled the area with sample homes as if they’re selling a new property development or something.

Rape in Hotline Miami 2: Should It Be a Concern?

A simulated rape scene in Hotline Miami 2 made PC Gamer writer Cara Ellison feel “resentment,” according to her preview of the game. This story will be all over the Internet soon, and many people will get upset — some already are (check out Twitter).

The first thing I thought when I read about the rape scene is “What does it actually look like?” Here it is (skip to 1:05). Not as bad as it could have been, right? And the “rape” is part of a fictional movie-in-a-game, right?

Yep, but I’ve also never been raped. I am also not a woman, so I don’t identify with the “victim” of Hotline Miami’ 2′s rape at all.

What if I were a female gamer who had been sexually abused or raped? I can only speculate about how I would feel. The rape in this game can be used as an opportunity for me and everyone to learn how a video game might affect a rape victim. I don’t think learning about how rape victims feel is a bad thing.

It’s a mistake to dismiss this issue from a standpoint of empathy and logic. Some people have dismissed the “rape” because Hotline Miami 2 also contains loads of violence. The idea is that no one should complain about rape if they never complain about the violence. This idea is ridiculous, as it assumes rape and murder are the same. Let me ask you this: will any murder victim ever play Hotline Miami 2? Nope, but a rape victim might. The question then becomes: could a simulated rape sequence in a game transport a rape victim back to his or her real-life rape?

Prey 2 Is Not Dead, Likely Being Developed By Arkane Studios

Long story short, Prey 2 is currently in the process of being overhauled by Arkane Studios after transferring hands from Human Head Studios. Kotaku has found several emails confirming as much, including the one credited to the outlet above, and believes that "Bethesda Misled Gamers" about it.

Now, I don’t really care that a company denied to comment or deflected responses concerning its lineup of games in production. Not every project by studios should be presented to the public (and thereby their competitors) during its inception, but only when the developer is ready to do so. Every company, including Bethesda, should have the right to keep them secret, and it’s not like they’re hiding something illegal or devious like a war crime or something like that.

Gamasutra - How Gone Home's design constraints lead to a powerful story

As a story and an experience, Gone Home is incredibly subtle, delicate as old paper or an electric filament. As a work of game design it’s equally so, the product of a small team with a heritage of big-budget environmental design stripping down to the heart of what its members have always wanted to do with their work.

The Fullbright Company’s Steve Gaynor long worked on the BioShock franchise, and most famously led the Minerva’s Den DLC for BioShock 2 — known for its strong story, carefully paced and told through discoveries in the game world. But in 2012 he went indie, picking up sticks and returning to his hometown of Portland, asking colleagues Johnnemann Nordhagen and Karla Zimonja to take a leap of faith with him. They all moved into one big house, and began a journey to answer a curious question: What would environmental storytelling in games be without the big budget, without combat, or a climactic boss battle?

A pretty personal experience, as it turns out. The game needs playing: Even small details of the story might spoil it. So much of Gone Home’s significant magic involves going in with certain expectations or curiosities, and then slowly learning about everything it has the bravery and restraint not to be, not to do.

The next game in the Resident Evil series will return to the game’s survival horror roots, Capcom says.

The firm told MCV it has listened to the negative feedback to last year’s Resident Evil 6, which scored a Metacritic of just 67.

Capcom had hoped to appeal to a wide audience with last October’s game by including three different stories that targeted different parts of the Resident Evil fanbase  including those that liked creepy survival horror and those that preferred action gameplay.

But it proved disappointing to fans and critics, and although it went on to sell 5m units worldwide, that was 2m below the company’s original sales projections.

"This includes work to localize the Xbox One dash, incorporate additional voice and languages, and build partnerships to bring apps and meaningful local content to each country."

Chaos Code Is Coming To North America Soon - Siliconera

Siliconera contacted FK Digital who confirmed the North American release and said Chaos Code will be released soon.

Chaos Code is a 2D fighting game with an eclectic cast of characters. The main character, Hikaru Otagi, is an otaku who hangs around Akihabara collecting figures. He’s contacted by Kagari to get the Chaos Code, which everyone in the game is fighting over. Cait & Sith are two characters in one and they are tiny in comparison to other fighters. Two characters are always on screen Cait & Sith can team up to extend their range. Vein is a badass with a sword and Bravo Peperoncine (my favorite character!) is a grappler that cooks opponents in bamboo steamers. The PlayStation 3 version also adds Kudlak Sin, the final boss, as a playable character.

The most likely answer to that question is that it’s an expansion for Diablo III, which has been rumored to be unveiled at the upcoming Gamescom convention in Germany. However, it’s also possible that it’s yet another expansion or addition to World of Warcraft.

Gilgamesh is one of the most beloved characters in the Final Fantasy series, even more so because he appears in almost every numbered chapter, with varying roles ranging from a villain to a NPC or even a summon.A few months ago we saw a piece of artwork showing his appearance in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, but today we got something a lot more substantial: the actual render of the textured 3D model. New Monster Hunter 4 Screenshots and Info Showcase the Poster Boy Goa Magara

Capcom Just released a large batch of screenshots and information about the new cover monster of Monster Hunter 4, the black dragon Goa Magara.

The mysterious monster is very rare. It doesn’t have eyes, but when its sensing ability reaches its maximum extent, new sensory organs protrude from its head and its body (especially the wings) changes color. That’s when it’s most dangerous and can unleash its powerful and explosive breath attack.

It has a restraining attack with which it can grab a hunter with the strong claws attached to its wings. Its leg slam can shake the ground with destructive power, and it also has a rush attack with which he can charge the unfortunate hunters in front of him, dealing massive damage.

EverQuest Next: Everything We Know

World of Warcraft cemented the MMO format back in 2004. Since then developers have been looking for new features that can set their game apart while still appealing to the same fanbase. They’ve tried quest-bearers that don’t have exclamation marks above their heads, server vs server battles, even moving the action to the game in Star Wars universe. None of it was enough to take the crown from Blizzard. SOE are making some radical changes to the MMO formula, making EverQuest Next one of the most intriguing games announced all year.

Every building in EverQuest Next can be levelled if you use enough force. SOE are building the world out of voxels, the same blocks at the core of Minecraft. The game won’t look like Minecraft: it just means that when a building is damaged the game is able to break the building into chunks based on the force and location of the impact.

Voxels present new opportunities for combat: bridges can be broken to hinder chasing mobs, walls smashed through to bring fort defenders crashing down from their raised advantage, and earth mounds can be raised to defend from attackers.

You won’t just be destroying things above ground: you can smash down, too. Secret caves can be broken into, loot discovered, and giant monsters disturbed, all by turning your sights earthwards.

Another Bidder for Atlus Surfaces: J Trust

Another bidder came out in the open in the war for the acquisition of Atlus (through its parent company Index Corporation). This time around we’re talking about J Trust, a Tokyo-based financial services firm that already made a bid during the preliminary auction and that aims to use funds raised through record rights to acquire the software developer and publisher.

Despite the fact that J Trust isn’t exactly a known name between gamers, it doesn’t lack the cash to make it through, as last month it raised 97.7 billion yen in Japan’s biggest-ever record rights sale. According to previous information the biggest offer during the preliminary auction for Atlus was about 20 billion yen.

Xbox 360 News: Mikami on The Evil Within and Dark Souls-style online -

In a recent interview with horror maestro Shinji Mikami on his new game The Evil Within, we spoke about everything from Resident Evil 4, to developing with the new Kinect, to how to create the right environments, tone and characters for a true survival horror experience.

One question (and answer) from the interview stood out in particular, however. When asked by OXM whether The Evil Within might ever follow the Dark Souls route – using online connectivity to enable other players to influence your game world – Mikami answered with a mysterious – "Yeah, maybe in DLC. I guess we can’t really get into details."

Suda 51 on originality, videogame sexism and next gen development

Edge Online: There’s an ongoing debate regarding the depiction of women in games. You see that encouraging players to ogle women via X-ray specs will be controversial, right?

Suda 51: We try to create a world that doesn’t really trace or depict what is considered ‘real’, but what I like to consider a ‘hyper-real’ world. And when you take examples in other pop-culture media… James Bond, especially, which is a big inspiration for Mondo girls – ‘Mondo girl’ is a play on the Japanese pronunciation of Bond girl, in fact. James Bond, after he does a mission, there’s always going to be a Bond girl who will, in between, offer him a moment of relief and relaxation. So I’m depicting something similar here, and I feel that the implementation of it will give the players a kind of beat, a type of rest.

Activision criticises immature, whiny a**holes who threaten CoD devs

Activision criticises immature, whiny a**holes who threaten CoD devs - GameSpot.com

Writing on his blog, Amrich said that Vonderhaar "often gets told he should die in a fire or kill himself or is a horrible person. If anybody thinks for a second that this is okay, it is not. But if the loudest voices in the Call of Duty ‘community’ act like an angry mob instead, guess how the entire world views Call of Duty? Now consider that these Internet Tough Guy rants and demands are not unique to COD, but exist everywhere, in many gaming communities. This is why the world often does not take gaming seriously; this is why gamers are assumed to be immature, whiny a**holes. Because the immature, whiny a**holes are louder."

"The fact that [Vonderhaar] focuses on the useful feedback, puts that intel to good use fixing the problem, and doesn’t irrationally lash out at the immature, whiny assholes is amazing."

Namco Bandai are at it again. The publisher has filed trademarks in Japan for Tales of Zestoria, Tales of Creales and Tales of Catastora for use with videogames. (Via: Hachima Kiko)

Now, keep in mind that not all of these are going to be turned into games. While certain Namco trademarks pan out, others like Tales of Floweria, Tales of Floria, Tales of Blessia and Tales of Startear never amounted to anything.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 'not possible' before Xbox One, PS4

Beyond Good & Evil 2 'not possible' before Xbox One, PS4 | Games industry news | MCV

Ubisoft’s development legend Michel Ancel has said that only the next-generation consoles could handle his ideas for Beyond Good & Evil 2.

The sequel to the acclaimed 2003 title has been teased for years now, and it was confirmed in 2011 that the game would not be coming out on current consoles.

Now the game’s creator has told IGN why.

Players will once again play investigative reporter Jade, but this time Ancel wants to give them the change to actually feel like they’re in charge of their investigation, rather than follow a storyline written by developers.

(Japan) Nintendo Trademarks "Fire Emblem" & "EMBLEM"

We at oprainfall rarely venture into stories that involve mostly speculation…or things becoming lost in translation…but when one of our Staff saw this a few hours ago, I figured it was worth spending a little time on. I’ve enlisted our two translators, Jodie and Will, to try to make sense out of what’s being reported here.

Intelligent Systems filed trademarks related to “Fire Emblem” and “EMBLEM” respectively on June 24th. These trademarks, meant for “use in home games/toys and media related to home games/toys”, were granted just a short time ago today, July 18th.
