Suda 51 on originality, videogame sexism and next gen development

Edge Online: There’s an ongoing debate regarding the depiction of women in games. You see that encouraging players to ogle women via X-ray specs will be controversial, right?

Suda 51: We try to create a world that doesn’t really trace or depict what is considered ‘real’, but what I like to consider a ‘hyper-real’ world. And when you take examples in other pop-culture media… James Bond, especially, which is a big inspiration for Mondo girls – ‘Mondo girl’ is a play on the Japanese pronunciation of Bond girl, in fact. James Bond, after he does a mission, there’s always going to be a Bond girl who will, in between, offer him a moment of relief and relaxation. So I’m depicting something similar here, and I feel that the implementation of it will give the players a kind of beat, a type of rest.

Activision criticises immature, whiny a**holes who threaten CoD devs - GameSpot.com

Writing on his blog, Amrich said that Vonderhaar "often gets told he should die in a fire or kill himself or is a horrible person. If anybody thinks for a second that this is okay, it is not. But if the loudest voices in the Call of Duty ‘community’ act like an angry mob instead, guess how the entire world views Call of Duty? Now consider that these Internet Tough Guy rants and demands are not unique to COD, but exist everywhere, in many gaming communities. This is why the world often does not take gaming seriously; this is why gamers are assumed to be immature, whiny a**holes. Because the immature, whiny a**holes are louder."

"The fact that [Vonderhaar] focuses on the useful feedback, puts that intel to good use fixing the problem, and doesn’t irrationally lash out at the immature, whiny assholes is amazing."

Ubisoft’s development legend Michel Ancel has said that only the next-generation consoles could handle his ideas for Beyond Good & Evil 2.

The sequel to the acclaimed 2003 title has been teased for years now, and it was confirmed in 2011 that the game would not be coming out on current consoles.

Now the game’s creator has told IGN why.

Players will once again play investigative reporter Jade, but this time Ancel wants to give them the change to actually feel like they’re in charge of their investigation, rather than follow a storyline written by developers.

We at oprainfall rarely venture into stories that involve mostly speculation…or things becoming lost in translation…but when one of our Staff saw this a few hours ago, I figured it was worth spending a little time on. I’ve enlisted our two translators, Jodie and Will, to try to make sense out of what’s being reported here.

Could Nintendo Be Looking To Revive Seaman?

Dreamcast owners will likely be all too familiar with an incredibly weird game that centered around conversing with a fish-man creature. Oddly enough, Seaman quickly became a sort of cult hit for Sega’s final gaming console, serving as one of the most strange and unique virtual pet games of all time.

Believe it or not, it appears that Nintendo may be looking to bring back the franchise in some capacity. According to Japanese blog Esuteru, The Big N has purchased the rights to "Mysterious Pet: Legend of the Fish With A Human Face," as well as "Mysterious Partner: Legend of the Fish With A Human Face."

Namco's Mystery 3DS Game Is Some Sort Of Anniversary Celebration

Another hint as to Namco Bandai’s mystery Nintendo 3DS title is available today, courtesy of the game’s teaser site.

The initial hints provided by the site, “V 20” and “F 30,” have now expanded into “V 20th Anniversary x F 30th Anniversary”. The “F” is probably referring to the 30th anniversary of the Famicom, which Nintendo themselves have been celebrating.

The former could refer to the 20th anniversary of Shueisha’s V Jump magazine. V Jump began publishing in 1993, which makes this its 20th year. This would mean that the game being hinted at is probably another manga crossover of some sort.

So, where does the Famicom part come in? A quick Google search shows that Bandai once published a crossover role-playing game titled Famicom Jump: Hero Retsuden on the Famicom, back in 1989. The game featured a variety of notable characters associated with Jump magazine, such as Kenshiro (Fist of the North Star), Joseph Joestar (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), Ryo Saeba (City Hunter) and more.

It’s possible that the new game is some sort of throwback or homage to Famicom Jump: Hero Retsuden. Either way, we probably won’t have to wait too long—Namco Bandai’s teaser site is scheduled to open in three days.

Former Valve employee on developer's "weird paranoia"

In a video interview, Valve’s former head of hardware, Jeri Ellsworth describes and critiques the Seattle-based developer’s working environment, calling it “a lot like High School.”

“There are popular kids that have acquired power,” she adds, “then there’s the trouble makers, and then everyone in between. Everyone in between is ok, but the trouble makers are the ones trying to make a difference.”

In her role Ellsworth was tasked with building a team focused on hardware and in the video chat she expounds on the frustrations of the job. “I was struggling trying to build this hardware team and move the company forward. We were having a difficult time recruiting folks – because we would be interviewing a lot of talented folks but the old timers would reject them for not fitting into the culture.”

“I shouldn’t say the numbers, but there were very few of us in the hardware department,” she says. “We were understaffed by about a factor of 100.”

"Freedom of exploration is something we want to prioritize for Dark Souls 2, even more so than Dark Souls 1," he told Digital Spy.

"In Dark Souls 1, you were able to travel to several areas, but hopefully for Dark Souls 2, there you have more freedom to explore throughout the game."

He continued: "We realize in Dark Souls 1 there were some certain orders, like ringing the bells or going to Anor Londo, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

"In Dark Souls 2, we’re hoping we can provide more freedom so things don’t have to necessarily be done in a certain order.

Reducing the staff count may lower overheads but it also comes at a cost, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has claimed.“If we reduce the number of employees for better short-term financial results employee morale will decrease and I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that could impress people around the world,” the charismatic exec told investors.“I believe we can become profitable with the current business structure in consideration of exchange rate trends and popularisation of our platforms in the future.“We should of course cut unnecessary costs and pursue efficient business operations. I also know that some employers publicize their restructuring plan to improve their financial performance by letting a number of their employees go, but at Nintendo, employees make valuable contributions in their respective fields, so I believe that laying off a group of employees will not help to strengthen Nintendo’s business in the long run.

Update on Atlus Mother Company Index Corporation's Rehabilitation

Last week, we reported that Index Corporation, owner of the video game brand Atlus, will be going through a streamlined version of bankruptcy called “Rehabilitation.” Today, we’ve received a number of new updates as Index continues to move forward.

First and foremost, Index’s application for Rehabilitation has been accepted by the Tokyo district court. The court has given the holdings company four months to carry out the proceedings, which will include searching for a sponsor for business transfers. Investment firm GCA Savvian has been appointed as the financial adviser for the search.

So far, a number of names have been thrown out as potential sponsors. Engadget Japan believes that it could come down to publishers Sega, Marvelous AQL, and GungHo, as well as social gaming companies GREE and DeNA. Remember, nothing has been confirmed; this is just speculation.

Read Tim Schafers note to Broken Age backers in full

Kickstarter backers received a note from Tim Schafer to explain the move yesterday – you can read it in full below.Hello, Backers of Adventure! Those of you who have been following along in the documentary know about the design vs. money tension we’ve had on this project since the early days. Even though we received much more money from our Kickstarter than we, or anybody anticipated, that didn’t stop me from getting excited and designing a game so big that it would need even more money. I think I just have an idea in my head about how big an adventure game should be, so it’s hard for me to design one that’s much smaller than Grim Fandango or Full Throttle. There’s just a certain amount of scope needed to create a complex puzzle space and to develop a real story. At least with my brain, there is. So we have been looking for ways to improve our project’s efficiency while reducing scope where we could along the way. All while looking for additional funds from bundle revenue, ports, etc. But when we finished the final in-depth schedule recently it was clear that these opportunistic methods weren’t going to be enough. We looked into what it would take to finish just first half of our game—Act 1. And the numbers showed it coming in July of next year. Not this July, but July 2014. For just the first half. The full game was looking like 2015! My jaw hit the floor.

Microsoft Execs Thought They Owned Donkey Kong After Acquiring Rare

Back in 2002 Microsoft forked out $375 million to acquire UK-based developer Rare, which had previously enjoyed a long prosperous period with Nintendo.

Of course that meant all of Rare’s intellectual properties went along for the ride, including Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie. However, according to Chris Seavor, former Rare employee and the director behind Conker’s Bad Fur Day, a few Microsoft executives also thought they’d picked up Donkey Kong as well, since the developer had made classic titles such as Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong 64.

Speaking on Twitter, Seavor said a few of the top-brass at Microsoft came for a tour around the studios and upon seeing Donkey Kong posters proceeded to get excited about owning the franchise – until Rare corrected them.
